USS Arizona/Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony

Tucson Chapter 106 Vietnam Veterans of America

The USS Arizona Memorial Dedication at the University of Arizona Mall will take place this coming Sunday, December 4th at 1500, on the Mall. This is the 75th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, during which the USS Arizona was sunk, taking with her, 1,177 Sailors and Marines.

Let’s try to make as good a showing as we can with as many members in uniform as possible. I don’t have any information on the parking in the area. There is also a special collections exhibit of artifacts from the Arizona at the U of A library that will be open from 1330-1430 on Sunday.

For those of you that are unaware, the Arizona Memorial is a low wall that stretches the dimensions of the ships main deck (approx. 600’) that has been built on the Mall. Along this wall, brass tokens are inlaid that have been inscribed with the names of each of the sailors and marines killed on that day.

Let us show our Honor and Respect for our fallen.

FW: DVNF E-Newsletter: #ThankVets this month

Dear Robert,
Happy May to you! This year has flown by so far, and I hope it has been as good for you as it has been for us. We have a busy couple of months coming up, and we are excited about it!
#ThankVets this Memorial Day
The first item that I want to discuss is this upcoming Memorial Day, and I want to hear from YOU. This month, I hope you'll help us recognize a veteran who is important to you!
DVNF is calling on you to submit a photo of a veteran who means a lot to you, and help us recognize and thank them for their service. Include a little bit about that veteran, such as their branch of service, rank, dates of service, and anything else notable you'd like to include. Make sure you add #ThankVets with your photo!
You can submit photos on our Facebook page, Twitter page, or you can email them to us at communications@dvnf.org. Once Memorial Day arrives, we will pay tribute to these veterans by creating a photo album on our website dedicated specifically to these individuals. We will also share the photos submitted on our social media sites with our followers.
For more information, check out our blog.
New Grant Recipients!
DVNF's organizational grants are intended to support organizations throughout the country who are addressing the mental and physical health needs of veterans in innovative ways.
Whether it's a group that train service dogs, helps veterans through recreational or art therapy, or any other type of initiative, these grants help make a difference in the lives of thousands of veterans.
The DVNF board has approved 33 new organizations to receive funding for their work on behalf of veterans. We will announce the new grantees in the coming weeks. These new grant recipients expand across the U.S. and are located in 19 different states, so veterans across the country will directly benefit from DVNF's support!
We will also host a luncheon in honor of these organizations in June so that we may properly thank them and award them with funding that will build their initiatives and their capacity to help veterans
Signs of PTSD and What to Do Next
We recently had a guest blogger, Katie Gillie, come by and discuss PTSD. She reminds those who suffer from it that while it can be painful and overwhelming, it is treatable and there are ways to manage it.
More importantly, it's important to remember that you aren't alone. A support group can go a long way to helping you overcome this illness and ultimately live a better life. Take a look at her advice!
I want to thank you for all your support so far this year. As you can see, it is making a difference, and we can't do it without your generosity. Please consider making your gift today, so that DVNF can continue to help our heroes!
Sincerely,
Joseph VanFonda (USMC SgtMaj Ret.)

December 7th - Remembering the Attack on Pearl Harbor

Dear Robert,

Everyone here at VetFriends.com has taken a moment to reflect and express our deepest respect and gratitude to the Courage, Bravery and Patriotism of all of our WWII Veterans, both living and deceased, along with all of our U.S. Veterans & Military. We salute you.

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Pearl Harbor Remembrance It is important for all of us to take a moment and remember the December 7th, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor - a defining moment in history.

The Pearl Harbor "surprise" helped shape a generation of National defense policy and was not forgotten by those who had lived through the war.

Monuments were erected on the battle sites and around the country Veteran reunion groups met regularly to keep the memory alive.

Please visit the VetFriends.com WWII/Pearl Harbor remembrance photo page at www.vetfriends.com/militarypics - dedicated to all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Pearl Harbor attacks, WWII and moreover throughout history.

Brief History - "Day that shall live in Infamy"

  • Under the greatest secrecy, Japanese Vice Admiral Nagumo took his ships to sea on the 26th of November 1941, as a result of Japan's pressing need for secure flanks during their planned offensive into Southeast Asia and the East Indies.

  • Before dawn on the 7th of December, a carefully planned attack wave of over 180 aircraft, including torpedo planes, high-level bombers, dive bombers and fighters, was launched in the darkness and flew off to the south. When the first group had taken off, a second attack wave of similar size, but with more dive bombers and no torpedo planes, was brought up from the carriers' hangar decks and sent off into the emerging morning light.

  • Dive bombers attacked airfields at about 7:55 AM, destroying many aircraft. This attack prompted the dispatch of the famous message "Air raid, Pearl Harbor -- this is no drill", the outside World's first indication that war had come to the Pacific.

  • Within a few moments, torpedo planes attacked from east and west, with one of the latter torpedoing the USS Helena at 1010 dock. Others, from the same direction, hit USS Utah and USS Raleigh, off the western side of Ford Island.

  • Within a short time five of eight battleships at Pearl Harbor were sunk or sinking, with the rest damaged. Several other ships and most Hawaii-based combat planes were also knocked out and over 2400 Americans were dead.

  • The United States Navy's battleship force was removed as a possible threat to the Japanese Empire's southward expansion. As a result, America was abruptly brought into the Second World War as a full combatant.

The memory of the "sneak attack" on Pearl Harbor fueled a determination for Americans to fight on against all opposed to World peace.

FW: Family Caregiver Expansion Legislation

"The Mind is like a Parachute... It does not work if it isn't open"

From: lbogle@dav.org
Date: Fri, 13 Nov 2015 10:51:27 -0600
Subject: Family Caregiver Expansion Legislation

DAV has worked diligently for several years as a part of a larger coalition of veterans organizations that promoted the advent of family caregiver support services for severely injured and ill veterans. Congress finally responded five years ago by enacting Public Law 111-163, the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010. However, that act limited services and supports to family caregivers of veterans injured or who became severely ill in military service only on or after September 11, 2001. That omission left thousands of veterans' families without the level of caregiver support and services they have needed because those veterans' health challenges, many from war injuries, occurred before that effective date.

On June 25, 2015, Representatives Elizabeth Esty and Ryan Costello introduced H.R. 2894, the "Caregivers Access and Responsible Expansion for All Veterans Act," or the "CARE for All Veterans Act."

If enacted, this bill would responsibly and finally address these families' needs on the same basis as those of veterans injured after September 11, 2001. Ultimately, when fully implemented, the bill would improve the lives of tens of thousands of veteran families, and will save the federal government massive sums that otherwise would need to be spent to provide institutional solutions to these veterans' health challenges and health maintenance. Therefore, this bill is both beneficial to these families and a taxpayer-friendly measure.

Please write your Representative to urge co-sponsorship and support of passage of H.R. 2894. A letter has been prepared for this purpose or you may write your own to express your views. As always, thank you for your support.
