Dear Robert, This July 4th, as we celebrate our freedom, and honor those who wear the uniform to defend it, I hope you'll remember heroes like Mike Tarpley. For nearly 50 years, Mike has undergone reconstruction because a Viet Cong grenade so damaged his face. We owe our freedom to men and women like Mike, Robert. Honorable men and women who served our country. So, will you take a stand for these veterans on Independence Day? Mike didn't let that grenade stop him. Determined to fight alongside his comrades, he continued fighting and refused to evacuate. It took a second hit to force this brave man to leave the fight. He suffered injuries that put him in the hospital for a year. Those injuries left him with constant vertigo, a brain injury and a frayed optic nerve. Wouldn't you think, Robert, that earning two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars in Vietnam would mean something when it came time to give this brave veteran his due? When the VA refused Mike the help he needed, he relied on folks like you, who defend freedom's defenders through DAV. Like Mike, DAV has a fighting spirit, Robert . We went to bat for him and saw to it that this veteran received his due. Ever the honorable man, Mike was determined to repay that kindness and did so by joining DAV and devoting his life to helping veterans. "The DAV has given me a purpose in life.
